Vipassana, or mindfulness meditation, was first taught by the Buddha 2,500 years ago. In this style of meditation, widespread today in Southeast Asia and increasingly popular in the West, one learns to watch what arises without judgment or reaction.

Sacramento might seem like a straightforward city without secrets, but if you’re willing to venture a little bit under the surface you’ll discover a pretty unique and interesting history. California’s capital was founded right beside two rivers that are prone to flooding, and after serious storms caused damage in the late 1800s, the streets and buildings were raised a level so that ground floor buildings in Old Town became basements.

Join us every Thursday evening for a home-cooked dinner to be enjoyed over good conversation – it’s a great way to make friends and make plans for exploring California’s capital.

Sip some brew (or a cosmo? tequila?) at five of the best bars along Polk Street, near our HI San Francisco City Center and Downtown hostels. Meet a bunch of other travelers and enjoy a night out in SF!

The crawl starts at 8:00 p.m. and guests are responsible for paying for their own drinks.

Join Molly and a troupe of fellow travelers for an easy scenic hike, which ends with a spectacular view of the sun easing its way below and beyond the Pacific. Whether you’re walking the trail to the “hobbit hole” or along the Lagoon trail to Rodeo Beach, there’s a chance you may encounter a deer or an owl and hear the seals barking in the twilight over at the Marine Mammal Center.

After the walk, which usually doesn’t last more than an hour, guests are treated to hot chocolate back at the hostel.
