Sacramento History Museum Underground Tours

Sacramento might seem like a straightforward city without secrets, but if you’re willing to venture a little bit under the surface you’ll discover a pretty unique and interesting history. California’s capital was founded right beside two rivers that are prone to flooding, and after serious storms caused damage in the late 1800s, the streets and buildings were raised a level so that ground floor buildings in Old Town became basements.

The Sacramento History Museum offers tours that feature a lively cast of guides who show visitors the result of this “jacking up” process. The half mile, hour-long guided adventure meanders through hollow sidewalks, down slanted alleyways and right into the heart of the underground spaces.
